But this was a mistake. I knew that Bulgaria, despite being an ally of Germany in WW2, did not deport its own Jewish citizens during the Second World War - the Orthodox Church and its congregants were very brave to stand up to the Nazis. But I wish the synagogue and its small museum were both open to visitors.<br /><br />That said, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia and the Rila Monastery would make the trip well worthwhile.
